Decorating Decisions for Ceilings and Trim

Ceiling Colors
When decorating and painting, don’t forget to look up. There are options when deciding what color to paint your ceiling. Here are some considerations:

1. White ceiling
This is the most traditional treatment of a ceiling area and it remains a popular and timeless choice. This classic selection also serves to brighten your space because a white ceiling reflects a lot of light.

2. Neutral ceiling
If you are using a neutral color on your walls, such as an off-white, beige or light gray, you might want to try extending this color onto the ceiling. This treatment softens a room and is particularly helpful in homes where wall surfaces blend into other rooms or where ceilings create odd angles. Continuing the wall color onto the ceiling, whether the color is neutral or bold, can also make the room appear taller, since there is no visual “stopping” point.

3. Colorful ceiling
A more bold color can be used on the ceiling; however, this unique treatment may take some getting used to. The safest spot to first try a colorful ceiling may be in a more private area of your home, such as a bedroom.

4. Softening ceiling contrast
If you’re using a deep color on your walls, such as red or hunter green, try selecting a mid-tone neutral for the ceiling. This will soften the harshness between a stark white ceiling and the deeper wall color.

Trim Colors
Trim ranks near the top of the list in decorating details. There are options when deciding what color to paint your trim. Here are some considerations:

1. White or off-white trim
Using white or off-white on trim can visually separate rooms by creating breaks in between areas of color. White or off-white trim offers high contrast and can highlight and bring attention to beautiful trim or molding. Just remember that if you are going for a crisp, clean look, use white, and for a softer division, use an off-white.

2. Trim that matches the wall color
Make your trim the same color as your wall if you want the spaces to blend together and have a contemporary look. This trick can also mask imperfections.

3. Monochromatic trim colors
Trim colors that are lighter or darker than the wall color add an element of beauty and depth and create a more traditional or colonial appearance.

4. Natural wood trim
If you’re in love with your home’s natural wood trim, then by all means, keep it! Just remember to consider the lightness or darkness of the wood when selecting your wall color, and be sure to view your wall color choice next to the existing wood in your home.

5. Trim for larger spaces
The trim in a larger space should maintain continuity throughout. We suggest a neutral color or white to provide a uniform appearance.
