Should I prime before painting?
We recommend that a primer always be applied prior to the topcoat for both interior and exterior projects. There are several key reasons to prime:
• To seal the surface on any new or bare surface.
• To ensure greater adhesion of the topcoat.
• To help prevent blistering, cracking and peeling of topcoat.
• To offer better color retention and fade resistance.
• To help control growth of new mildew.
• To cover stains or major changes to ensure complete coverage of topcoat.
• To cover old chalky or weathered surfaces.
How do I paint brick or stone?
• If the surface has never been painted, it is important to prime it using any latex topcoat. Thin the topcoat with water, up to 1 cup per gallon mix. Apply one coat.
• If the brick has been previously painted, prepare the surface by using a wire brush first to remove any loose paint. Unless the old coat of paint was peeling all over, a single coat of latex paint should be sufficient to refresh. To finish the job, use the same paint—not thinned—as the second or final coat.
I’m painting my house, where do I start?
Painting the exterior of a house in the correct order will not only save time, but it will also save money. Start with the (1) gables, (2) siding, (3) windows, (4) trim, and (5) doors.
Can I use interior paints outside?
We do not recommend using an interior-labeled paint for exterior use. Interior paints are designed for specific use on interior surfaces; hence performance and film integrity may be compromised if used on exterior surfaces.
Can I use exterior paints inside?
We do not recommend using an exterior-labeled paint for interior use. Exterior paints are designed for specific use on exterior surfaces; hence performance and film integrity may be compromised if used on interior surfaces. Additionally, exterior paints typically have mildewcides in their formulation, which resist the growth of mildew on dry paint film. The level of mildewcides in the exterior paint may be above the level recommended for interior use.
Can new aluminum and vinyl siding be painted?
New aluminum and vinyl siding should be allowed to weather at least six months before painting. The factory finish on aluminum siding may contain wax or silicone that could adversely affect adhesion of an applied paint. Vinyl siding contains a plasticizer that will also cause adhesion problems.
What is the best recommendation for painting weathered aluminum siding?
Aluminum siding tends to chalk after weathering. The chalk should be removed prior to painting by cleaning with soap, water and a soft scrub brush. High pressure power washing can also be effective if you do it right. Thoroughly rinse the surface and allow it to dry before painting.
• Once chalk is entirely removed, an exterior acrylic latex house paint may be applied directly to the siding.
• If light chalk remains, prime with a chalk penetrating acrylic latex primer.
• If heavy chalk remains, prime with an exterior alkyd house paint primer.
Finish as desired. A satin finish will closely mirror the original factory finish sheen. Two coats of finish will provide a longer service life.
It is still winter time, and I want to paint the outside of my house. What is the appropriate exterior painting temperature for latex paints?
The air and surface temperature of the paint needs to be 50 degrees Fahrenheit or above while painting, and for 24 hours following. Temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit may affect the cure and overall performance of the paint. This rule of thumb holds true for most exterior latex or acrylic paints, unless otherwise denoted "Cold Weather" paints, such as Devoe® Regency or Wonder-Shield exterior paints. These products may be used as long as the temperature is 35 degrees Fahrenheit or above.
Can plastic shutters be painted?
Yep. Before painting, make sure the shutters are dirt free. Apply a single coat of high-adhesion primer. Follow with a 100% acrylic latex, satin, or semi-gloss paint, such as one of our Devoe® Ultra-Color® products, in your choice of color. Two coats may be required based on how well a single coat covers the primer.
Do you make low odor, no-VOC paints?
Yes. We are dedicated to bringing you some of the most environmentally responsible formulations on the market—virtually all our latex products are no-VOC or low-VOC.
I think the house paint on my exterior is blistering. How do I know if it is blistering and what can I do to solve the problem before I repaint?
Blistering is caused by moisture seeping through walls from the inside of your house or from painting a wet surface. You can solve the problem by making sure you identify and correct any interior moisture problem before painting.
For further help, call your local independent paint retailer. Many times, they can send someone to your home to help identify issues and provide proper solutions.
How can I safely dispose of leftover paint?
If you have any leftover paint, thinner or other chemicals, they should never be poured down the drain or otherwise disposed of carelessly. Leftover paint in useable conditions can be donated to churches, schools or other organizations.
• To determine if old paint is still useable, stir it with a paint stick and if the paint is smooth, it is still good.
• Empty cans, or those with a small amount of water-based paints left in them, should be left open and allowed to dry in a ventilated area, out of the reach of children and pets. In most states, cans with dried latex paint may be discarded with household trash.
• Oil-based or alkyd paints left in a can should be allowed to dry by adding absorbent material such as kitty litter. Leftover paint can become dangerous if not disposed of correctly.
Research the disposal procedures recommended in your municipality. Some make regular, scheduled pickups of household hazardous waste; some have recycling programs.
Does paint expire, or have a specific shelf life?
When stored properly, an unopened can of latex or oil-based paint should have a shelf life of 2 years. The best storage for paint is in a cool, dry area, away from extreme hot and cold temperatures. Paint should never be allowed to freeze and should be stored away from furnaces and other heat generating appliances.
